BocageVillage Allies Acererak Summary Same set up as against CharlyG but totally different outcome. I started off the same, i.e. ran the Hellcats, Firefly and Sherman up the right side to cover any - what I would expect to be - light armour (Puma) coming towards me. Also put infantry into the wood on the right to (i) take the VP and (ii) hold and see what was other side of wood. Worked well. Able to position and then move across towards the town without major losses. Also moved infantry in force into the town, but keeping them on towards back until seeing what Axis plans were. Tiger moved into the built up area but got swarmed by infantry. On the left the Axis armour was hit and surpressed so that slowly wore it down. Now that was how it should have gone!
BocageVillage Allies CharlyG Summary I got completely caught by surprise in the first couple of turns by a major thrust towards my right flank, including both Panthers and Panzer IVs and at least 3 infantry units in the wood containing the flag. I hadn't expected to see anyone in there! I'd thought the Axis' wouldn't come that way in numbers as too restricted. Consequently lost both M18s, the Firefly, M16 AA, at least 1 Sherman and 1 or 2 infantry by the end of the Axis' 2nd turn! The plan had been to set up covering your approaches and then move forward with overwatch ... never had a chance. With those loses it all became a bit desperate and spread out on my part - losing units, seemingly every time they moved, and not being close enough to even get a chance to kill ... the number of times I saw 0%! And to add insult to injury I lost both M5s to a very well placed Panzershreck.
DesertEncounter Allies Acererak Summary01 Enjoyed this one against Acererak- tense to the bitter end; it was only on the Axis last turn he got 3 flags of his 6 flags! Cracking placement of at least one of his AT guns - it may have been 2 I never got close enough to find out - accounted for all but 1 of my Bren carriers. It hit every shot even at range with fast moving! Should have got the hint after the first 3 or 4 ... noob mistake. And really hurt me for getting to some of the flags away from the town; my only flag was from my remaining carrier on the Axis home flag!
DesertEncounter Allies Acererak Summary02 The long range of the 2 PanzerIVs and Marder made life interesting. The Allied AA was effective - got the Stuka 2 or 3 times, so there's an advantage though don't think it's that big. Saying that the Allied Hurricane got a few hits (2 or 3 possibly). Matilda's front armour was useful but still felt nervous on each shot and they got suppressed quickly (just on a couple of time ... 49% I mean ...!) so apart from occasional opfire didn't do much apart from get in the way and worry his Panzers.
DesertEncounter Allies Acererak Summary03 Though it's looking like an Axis whitewash on this round I reckon the balance is OK. Axis can get 4 of the flags in 1st - 2nd turn but Allies can easily get 3 and setup for push on others. First time I'd played it and next time could be different ... maybe!
DesertEncounter Allies Acererak Summary04 Acererak - I had another AT gun in town, but really did not have that much work since the first one, as you say, was having its lucky day. I know how scary looks one flank when you have one of these nasty baby hidden there blowing appart everything that sticks its nose out there. I pretty much held your efforts in the whole north part of the town thanks to it.
DesertEncounter Allies Acererak Summary05 Acererak - I think i got the upper hand because you lost 90% of your infantry in the very begining, handling the whole town to me for almost the whole battle. That gave me the upper hand in the end, I believe. I got one of the few Stuka lucky shots to your mortar in the first turn also. You didn´t have that important asset for the whole battle either.
DesertEncounter Allies Acererak Summary06 Acererak - Those Matildas did acomplish a great mission even if the final account of losses is not great (they took out one of the PanzerIV though...). Just suppressing them is a tremendous effort that made me concentrate almost all my resources on them, slowing me down up to a point where as you say, my victory came almost in the last turn. At the end, even if suppressed...they survived!
DesertEncounter Allies Acererak Summary07 Had tried to blot the fiasco with the mortar from my memory! Moved them too forward too fast trying to be clever and then I think - memory of a goldfish - they got placed in the open (stupid error) just in time for the Stuka! Only managed one stonk after that before going to their Maker. The plan had been to get them in place the end of the town to try and suppress your infantry in the town with my infantry screening - but you know what they say about plans and contact with the enemy.
